I can tell you if you want to attract visitors to join your wiki put lots of information and pictures on your homepage and beleive me it works! 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

If you want more visitors to your site, then
1. Put your wiki's hot topics on the home-page, along with pictures; so that, everyone get a clear idea of what your wiki is all about.
2. Don't put many widgets to your home-page, as it takes more time to download.

Before, creating your home-page I would suggest you to draw it down on a paper and then start building. It saves both time and money.
